“Will cheese in pants mean life in prison?” That was the headline of an OC Register news story last week. This ridiculous headline—accompanied by an alluring picture of Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese—was meant to stir attention surrounding California’s Three Strikes law.

Apparently a man who stole a woman’s wallet and a $3.99 package of shredded cheese now faces a life sentence charge. But it appears that he’s done a lot more than just that. The man previously had six first-degree burglary convictions, making these petty thefts count as felonies, reports The Sacramento Bee.

“Holding the defendant fully accountable will protect society from a repeat criminal offender,” prosecutor Clinton Parish’s motion says, according to the newspaper.

While the headline stimulated a great debate in the blog’s comments section (which drew 91 comments total), it also inspired some pretty childish banter. There was a “Is that a bag of cheese in your pants or are you just glad to see me?” Another person wrote: “Will the title to this article be the only one we remember you for?” Let’s hope not!

Do you think this man should do life for such a petty crime? We’ll keep an eye on this one to see how it plays out.
