Mark your calendars because in two weeks the follow-up to TLC’s Police Women franchise hits the airwaves.

Police Women of Memphis, a 12-part series, will track four female officers with the Memphis Police Department, one of the nation’s largest police departments, as they cruise the South’s mean streets. For fans of TLC’s Police Women of Broward County and Maricopa County, this reality series will be a continuation of celebrating women in law enforcement.

While Officers Aubrey Olson, Arica Logan, Joy Jefferson and Virginia Awkward have already filmed the series, there’s still a thing or two these ladies can glean by watching some former TV policewomen.

We looked back to find the most infamous TV moments and documented what they have taught us all. That way, when Police Women of Memphis premiers Thursday, May 27 at 9 p.m. EST, we’ll see if they should heed the following advice…

1.	Cagney & Lacey’s Mary Beth Lacey (Tyne Daly): Don’t let your partner get away with anything.

2.	T.J. Hooker’s Officer Stacey Sheridan (Heather Locklear): Don’t go undercover as an exotic dancer unless you look like Heather Locklear.

3.	The Sheild’s Captain Monica Rawling (Glenn Close): Never let a boy into the girl’s bathroom.

4.	Police Women of Broward County’s Andrea Penoyer: Be able to switch from mommy mode into badass-cop mode within a moment’s notice.

Thought you'd never see Officer Tom Hanson's 21 Jump Street jean jacket or the Miami Vice alligator again? Think again. We reveal the 10 most-remembered TV police officers of three decades ago.

Tuesday is a spectacular day. We’re one day closer to Friday; one day further from Monday. Oh, how to celebrate such a grand occasion… how about with a top 10 list? Each week we’ll be serving up a new one for Top 10 Tuesday.

Our first installation is inspired by a general lack of tactical pants in ’80s television. Instead these Hollywood cops wore pleated pants, white slacks and on occasion (bless their hearts) short shorts. Despite their lack of fashion logic, they managed to kick some major butt and look good all the while.

EDIT: We’ve been getting an onslaught of comments about our definition of “cop.” For the purpose of this list, it does include private eyes, vigilantes and other assorted we-fight-the-bad-guy types.

1. Michael Knight, Knight Rider

While Michael Long (David Hasselhoff) started off as a policeman, he is shot and transforms into the devastatingly handsome Michael Knight, continuing his crime-fighting destiny.

2. Officer Tom Hanson, 21 Jump Street

Officer Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) not only became a major heartthrob on 21 Jump Street, his boyish looks assisted in undercover operations among high school and college students.

3. Officer Francis “Ponch” Poncherello, CHiPS

The highways of California offer plenty of opportunities for Officer Francis “Ponch” Poncherello (Erik Estrada), a rambunctious motorcycle patrolman, to show us exactly what he’s made out of.

4.	Sgt. T.J. Hooker, T.J. Hooker

Even as a veteran law officer, Sgt. T.J. Hooker (William Shatner) is always ready to face the mean streets. So punks, watch out!

5.	Thomas Magnum, Magnum P.I.

Known for his magnificent mustache, private detective Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) of Magnum P.I. sure does wear a lot of Hawaiian shirts. And short shorts. Being able to catch bad guys dressed like that is a feat in itself.

6.	Christine Cagney, Cagney and Lacey

NYPD detective and tough gal Christine Cagney (Sharon Gless) gets paired up with a working mom Mary Beth Lacey. Thus, Cagney and Lacey is born, and plenty of crime fighting ensues.

7.	Det. James “Sonny” Crocket, Miami Vice

The fact that Det. James “Sonny” Crocket (Don Johnson) has a pet alligator named Elvis to guard his sailboat/home definitely qualifies him as a badass. And taking on Florida drug world while sporting shoulder pads and snow-white slacks doesn’t hurt.

8.	Lieutenant Columbo, Columbo

Underneath the cigar smoke, the trench coat and apparent incompetence lies Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk), homicide detective and resident badass.

9. Bill Gillespie, In the Heat of the Night

There’s nothing quite like being the sheriff in small town USA. Bill Gillespie (Carroll O’Connor) shows that teamwork makes all the difference when upholding the law.

10. Sgt. Rick Hunter, Hunter

The Los Angeles Police Department has never seen a homicide detective like Sgt. Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer). We love him for his gritty attitude and swagger on Hunter.

Every corner we turn in Internet land brings us back to the same video: “Pants on the Ground”.

The American Idol snippet has been bestowed the honor of 2010’s first viral video. The inescapable YouTube clip isn’t so much a video as a song — a song about pants (unfortunately not tactical pants!). And like every viral video, it’s been remixed, acoustified (again, again and again) and beat boxed. Actually, here’s a list of its top 10 remixes.

Do you think we should commission songwriter and gifted performer Larry Platt to write a tactical version of “Pants on the Ground”? Here’s what the lyrics might look like:

Tac pants on the ground?
There’s no tac pants on the ground!
Lookin’ very cool with your pants belted right.
Now your pants won’t hit the ground…
When you’re on the clock, lookin’ very cool
Walking downtown with your tac pants on — yeah!
Get your tac pants on!

Hmmm … then again, maybe we’ll leave songwriting up to Mr. Platt. He certainly seems to have a knack for catchy lyrics.

There’s been reality shows with dash cams and some with webcams. And now there’s a show being shopped around as the first featuring head-mounted cams.

Under the working title POV-PD, the new series promises the COPS-esque, random-guys-running-around-in-wife-beaters chaos with a more up-close-and-personal twist. Produced by Base Productions, the same people responsible for Crime 360 and Human Wrecking Balls, the show is reportedly near a deal with a major cable network, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Taser International manufactures the AXON head cams, which were unveiled in 2008, and is playing a major role in the show’s production.

“POV-PD will provide a new platform of long-form television to show the public the challenges and heroic actions of law enforcement, recorded from the visual perspective of the men and women who put their lives on the line every day,” Rick Smith, CEO and founder of Taser International, told THR.

Police in San Jose, Calif., are already putting those head-mounted cameras to use, recording interactions with civilians who apparently are on their best behavior when they know the cameras are rolling. Take a look.

S.W.A.T. Magazine TV brings its magazine pages to life with 30 minutes of adrenaline-pumping action. Hosted by staff writer and resident badass Rob Pincus, the show gives an insider’s look at law enforcement and military training.

By featuring different instructors each week, S.W.A.T. Magazine TV preps you for any home or self defense situation. The instructors’ personalities will also be on display with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their lives. And though it hasn’t been confirmed, S.W.A.T. Magazine TV will likely highlight some pretty sweet tactical pant styles.

“Our goal with the show is to provide the same quality information that we provide in the magazine, but delve further into topics that our readers want to see,” Pincus said in a prepared statement.

Scheduled guest include Louis Awerbuck, Tony Blauer, Travis Haley, James Yeager and other instructors currently active in the military and law enforcement professions as well as magazine staff writers, instructors and industry representatives.

And then there’s this gem from the promo video: “If you can deal with that person properly using the tactics and the training that you’ve learned, and you don’t either have to severely injure or kill that person … that’s better for that person, and it’s better for that person’s family, it’s better for you and better for the county that you work for,” says a local sheriff.

Yes, not killing someone typically benefits all parties involved. Glean more sage advice starting on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. EST in January.
